“Innovation of Higher Education in the Digital Age”

Sep 29, 2023 I Keynote Speech Summary at Athens Democracy Forum 2023 in Greece

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how we view and conduct higher education in a profound manner. On the one hand, it has the potential to provide students with a more personalized and interactive learning experience where critical thinking and collaboration are prioritized.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about the dramatic proliferation of online classes, which in turn has increased the need for innovative, discussion-based class activities.

And now with the arrival of AI, there is no denying that large-scale classroom education, which evolved in the mass production system of the 20th century, will soon give way to customized individual learning.

These new forms of learning center on nurturing problem-solving skills and field experiences rather than a one-sided transfer of knowledge. The case of Taejae University offers a glimpse into how higher education can remain relevant through innovation in the digital age.

On the other hand, AI’s uncharted nature raises valid and urgent concerns about the potential adverse impact it could have on privacy, agency, ethics, and security. In order to address these challenges properly, it is imperative to create an international regime where civil society, businesses, and governments can figure out the best way to prevent unethical or dangerous use of AI.
